Tenerife is an undisputed destination in Europe for some of the best hiking trails. As the largest of the Canary Islands, the sheer amount of hikes in Tenerife will leave you spoilt for choice! More than 1,000 kilometers of trails fleck the bustling island – easily surpassing its sister Fuerteventura.Β
I spent 5 days in Tenerife, where I got a taste of its ample hiking opportunities, allowing me to connect with the island in a different manner.Β

Hiking in Tenerife is the best way to explore its diverse and incredible nature. Who would haveΒ of finding a combination of lush mountainscapes, sprawling banana plantations, hundreds of volcanoes, and back sand beaches without leaving Europe?
As Tenerife is home to numerous hiking trails, youβll be glad for an insight into finding out where to go, what to do, and which of many Tenerife hiking trails is best for you.Β
With this list of the 9 Best Hikes in Tenerife, uncover amazing hikes within the renowned Mount Teide National Park, north and south Tenerife, plus some tips, like where to stay in Tenerife for hiking, to help you on your journey!
Top Tips Before Hiking on TenerifeΒ
Tenerifeβs varied landscape is remarkably accessible, considering how quickly the island changes from charming small towns to remote and rugged wilderness. And with that being said, the most efficient way to flit from one hiking destination to another is with your own car. Skip out on figuring out the bus routes, and opt for a cheap rental instead!
When it comes to hikes in Tenerife, from the UNESCO-listed Mount Teide National Park to the deep ravines of Anaga Rural Park, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.
Even on shorter treks, like those in Anaga, which I explored during my 5 days in Tenerife, it’s important to wear sturdy shoes; trails can span across loose volcanic landscapes or meander along unpredictable cliffs.

With consistent sunlight and exposure, especially in the southern regions, it’s also best to bring lots of water, dress appropriately (light and breathable hiking shirts and pants), and carry plenty of sunscreen!
Spring and fall are the best times for hikes in Tenerife when the sun isnβt too strong. But if you are traveling to Tenerife in the summer, make the most of the early and late afternoon hours.
Much of what youβll soon discover in Tenerife is a stunning but delicate landscape. Itβs vital to stay on the hiking trails to avoid trampling on endemic plants or further widening a path designed to protect the islandβs natural beauty.
Best Tenerife Hikes in the Mount Teide National ParkΒ
Extinct, dormant, or active, volcanoes always make a lasting impression! There is something so captivating about their beauty yet untamed ability where all it takes is one day for everything to change.Β
This is why Mount Teide National Park, one of Spainβs oldest national parks carpeting the center of Tenerife, draws in millions of visitors. Here youβll find Spainβs highest peak – that of a dormant volcano – soaring to the height of 12,199 feet (3,719m) and the essence of many epic hikes that could quickly flood a Tenerife itinerary.Β
Below, find out my top three Tenerife hikes in Mount Teide National Park:
Los Roques de Garcia
Length: 2.2m (3.5km)
Duration: 1-2 hours
Elevation Change: +- 508ft (155m)
Difficulty: Easy
At the top of the list of best hikes in Tenerife is Mount Teide’s Los Roques de Garcia. A day hike that will suit most trekking abilities, this trail sweeps you up to the edges of two majestic peaks, La Catedral and Roque Cinchado. But the best part (apart from the other-worldly terrain) – it’s easily accessible!
Traveling by car to Mount Teide National Park is the best way to see one of Tenerifeβs most spectacular natural landmarks, and this trail comes fixed with a grand old parking lot stationed at the very beginning.Β
Crowds gather here to see Mount Teide and the breathtaking caldera. But don’t worry; the numbers dwindle as you embark on an easy hike that takes you past dramatic rock formations that gather on a plateau as if straight from mars!
Within half a mile, youβll find yourself on the precipice of La Catedral, an ancient rock formation that lives up to its name, as a giant that looms over all before it.Β
The trail continues around, creating a loop back to the car park. The beautifully barren landscape ensures no view is blocked, and Tenerifeβs patented blue skies shine unperturbed.
Chinyero Volcano Loop
Length: 4.6m (7.3km)
Duration: 2 hours
Elevation Change: + 686ft (209m)
Difficulty: Easy
On the foothills of Mount Teide sits a smaller volcano: Chinyero. However, despite its size, Chinyero is responsible for the last volcanic eruption in Tenerife, a ten-day explosive affair back in 1909. Now, over a century later, you can walk around the edges of a unique volcanic landscape forever changed by molten lava.
This trek is an easy circular trail that guides you through lava fields burned to a crisp, as well as verdant Canarian pine forests. This contrast exists in the shadows of the impressive Chinyero Volcano, which is never out of sight, some 4,941 feet (1506m) above.Β

Along the two-hour journey, youβll find several elevated viewpoints that provide a spectacular view of Mount Teide, an imposing sight from any distance.Β
With less than 700 feet of elevation gain spread across the 4.6-mile loop, you won’t have to dread an upcoming climb. The Chinyero Volcano Loop is one of the best hikes in Tenerife for families and those who want to experience the island’s incredible diversity of microclimates – without having to burst your lungs!
As the lava fields are exposed, we recommend starting this hike early to avoid the midday heat while also making it easier to find a spot to park.
Mirador de SamaraΒ
Length: 3.2m (5.1km)
Duration: 3 hours
Elevation Change: +- 1010ft (308m)
Difficulty: Easy
Memorable views are littered throughout the Mirador de Samara. The 3.2-mile hike through ever-changing scenery is capped off by circling the summit of the Samara Volcano, an unmissable experience!
The well-marked trail weaves through volcanic fields that continue to show signs of life. Back down in the valley, the Canarian pine forest sweeps through with a smattering of pines, laburnums, and even peak roses, adding plenty of color to the scene. Along the way, the soaring peaks of Mount Teide and Pico Viejo tower high above Samara.
A common theme of hiking around this unforgettable national park is the openness of the landscapes. The exposure to the sweltering Atlantic sun – donβt forget your sunscreen –Β is well worth it for the chance to experience the sheer scale of this beautiful region.
As you gain more and more elevation, youβll find the air will cool, making each break more pleasant. Those traveling here during the winter may even come across snow hanging onto the crust of a once violent volcano.

Best Hikes in Tenerife in the NorthΒ
When it comes to hiking in Tenerife, the mind immediately wanders to the natural beauty of the northern region, marked by lush mountains.
Most famously, in the north of Tenerife, youβll discover the Anaga Rural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that boasts hundreds of endemic plant species in the islandβs oldest section, with authentic culture along the way! Anaga is where I learned – the hard way – that you shouldnβt sleep on hiking shoes when hiking in Tenerife 😅
Benijo to Faro de Anaga Circuit
Length: 3.2m (5.1km)
Duration: 7 hours
Elevation Change: +4698ft (1432m)
Difficulty: Difficult
This circuit hike is a trek that takes the highlights of the Anaga Rural Park and ties it all together. The lengthy but rewarding day hike can take up to seven hours to complete but will guide you through ancient laurel forests, along the vast coastline, and to picture-perfect remote villages.
The starting point is in the hamlet of Benijo on the northern coast, where youβll cling to the coastline for some time before two imposing rocks jut out of the ocean; the Roques de Anaga, and soon after, youβll stumble across the beautiful small village of Taganana.Β
It only gets better as you continue to the green and white Faro de Anaga, a lighthouse overlooking the deep blue Atlantic. From there, the trail turns inland as you head steeply up to the summit of Montana Tafada, where mountain goats roam.Β
Afterwards, descend to the tiny village of Chamorga, whose buildings filter in with the lush landscape. Youβll continue crossing inland until reaching the coast once again and turning your feet back towards Benijo.

The Trail of the Senses
Length: 0.4 miles to 1 mile
Duration: 1 hour
Elevation Change: Minimal
Difficulty: Easy
A combination of three short hikes, the Trail of the Senses, which I tackled on my 5 day Tenerife itinerary, is less demanding but an equally insightful look into the nature and history of Tenerife. It’s found along an ancient royal path that connected the historic city of La Laguna to Anaga.Β
Each trail, framed by laurel forests, helps to heighten your senses, bringing attention to touch, smell, and sight through a series of information boards peppered along the way. For example, some panels will invite you to listen to the twittering birds or to hone your sense of smell.
Thanks to the wide pathway, the Trail of the Senses is one of the best hikes in Tenerife for those with mobility impairments!
Rambla de Castro
Length: 6.7m (10.8km)
Duration: 3 hours
Elevation Change: +- 1400ft (427m)
Difficulty: Moderate
One of the main reasons many visit Tenerife is the historic town of Puerto de la Cruz. Although not within the Anaga National Park, itβs home to a breathtaking coastline which is best explored by traversing the Rambla de Castro trail. Hikers will find surprises around every bend, where astounding views are bettered at every turn!
The marked path begins from the Hotel Maritim, wasting no time flaunting what you can expect along the way. From the beginning to the end at San Pedro Mirador, there are only a few interruptions to the seemingly endless ocean and cliffside views.Β

Highlights include sea stacks coated in moss and surrounded by the swirling ocean blue, plus terraced farms that spread to where the land ends.
In the last stretch of this out-and-back trek, you’ll find yourself above what looks to be an abandoned castle with a zig-zag path leading down to it. In fact, it’s an old (and still running) water pump feeding the surrounding farms!

Continue your way until the aromas of the Restaurant Mirador San Pedro permeate the air – a just reward for completing the first half of the Rambla de Castro!
At the end of the trail, donβt shy away from venturing down the steep cliff – youβll be met by scuttling lizards along the way, lofty palm trees, and a stretch of glittering black sand at the bottom, along with a quaint waterfall that cascades directly onto the beach!

Best Hikes in Tenerife in the SouthΒ
What makes hiking in Tenerife so exciting is the diversity of its landscapes! The difference between Tenerifeβs south and north is put firmly on display in the hikes I explore below.Β
The south of the island has a drier and warmer climate, especially along the coastline where beaches are more golden-colored and finer, the terrain is less mountainous and the vegetation is more sparse.
Masca Gorge Trail
Length: 6.2m (10km)
Duration: 6 hours
Elevation Change: +- 2030ft (619m)
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult
The Masca Gorge Trail is a trek right out of the hiking playbook, with stunning vistas, sharp drops, pristine nature, wild rivers, and secluded beaches! What else could you possibly want? A boat ride at the end? Well, the Masca Gorge Trail has that too!
This three to four-hour hike belongs at the top of the list of hikes in Tenerife in this part of the island. It begins with a quick descent into the famous gorge, where stone monoliths form a natural amphitheater.
Β
Soon creeks trickle on by, continuing their journey from Mount Teide to the ocean. The gorge, now smooth from centuries of water flow, cools the air, guiding you to a sparkling beach.
Masca Beach is just a reward for a steep but spellbinding trek. Though only a tiny alcove surrounded by stark cliffs, the turquoise bay is nonetheless idyllic!Β
It can take anywhere from three to four hours to arrive at the beach, so youβll want to catch your breath before the steep path back to the quaint town of Masca.Β
Not up for the return hike? Catch a ferry from your sandy enclave to the town of Los Gigantes before jumping on a bus for the return journey along a memorable coastal road.
NOTE: Prior registration and tickets are required to embark on the Masca Gorge Trail.Β
Barranco del Infierno
Length: 3.2m (6.5km)
Duration: 2-3 hours
Elevation Change: +- 820ft (250m)
Difficulty: Moderate
Barranco del Infierno sits on the edges of one of the most popular towns in the south of Tenerife, Costa Adeje. If you wish to explore yet another fiery, volcanic landscape, as the gorgeβs name would suggest, youβll be left disappointed. However, that feeling will quickly be put to the wayside as your steps lead you into 2,000 hectares of postcard-worthy nature!

Vast and steep rock formations create a stunning ravine, once the home of shepherds and their flock. Now, it’s a vastly untouched land where creeks tumble into waterfalls and a collection of unique flora coats the canyon.Β
The main hike here is an out-and-back trek, just over four miles long, taking you through a maze of thistles and dragon trees to the highest waterfall on this island!

Dotted along the hiking trail is also a series of caves renowned for being the home to some of Tenerife’s earliest inhabitants.Β
NOTE: To access this trail, you’ll need to purchase a permit, which can also be done on arrival.
Camino del Risco to Punta de Teno Trail
Length: 6.3m (10.1km)
Duration: 4 hours
Elevation Change: 617m
Difficulty: Difficult

The best hikes in Tenerife are often on the easy-to-moderate side of the ledger. While this shows the accessibility of Tenerife’s breathtaking nature and mountains, sometimes we just want to get our heart racing and break a solid sweat, all the while surrounded by picture-perfect scenery!
If this sounds like you, add the Camino del Risco to Punta de Teno Trail to your Tenerife itinerary!
Beginning in the coastal hamlet of Buenavista del Norte on the western shoreline, you’ll start a six-mile trek along an impervious coast where but a single island stands between you and the United States.Β
ΒΒΒΒΒView this post on InstagramΒΒΒΒΒΒΒΒΒΒΒ
Before reaching the rugged headland of Punta de Teno, you’ll first tackle a summit. Just over two miles lie between the trailhead and the top of Teno Alto, a great place to stop and enjoy lunch!
After admiring the endless Atlantic Ocean and the jagged coastline, continue through Parque Rural de Teno, known for its few quaint farmhouses and goats grazing the lands. Around 90 minutes after leaving the summit, discover a striped lighthouse, an iconic sight in Punta de Teno.Β
From there, appreciate the majestic Log Gigantes Cliffs in the distance. To save yourself a return hike, you can head back to the beginning of the trail via bus.

Where to stay for Hikes in Tenerife
To complement your nature-filled holiday, I recommend renting a villa throughout your Tenerife trip! Not only do you get a good dose of privacy and a sense of authenticity, but black sand beaches and banana plantations are just a few natural gems to name that you could readily enjoy at your fingertips!
I cover a range of villas all over the island in my blog post on the 20 best villas in Tenerife. However, Iβve narrowed it below to where to stay in Tenerife for hikes:Β
Booking.com
The Parador de las CaΓ±adas del Teide – If your main goal is exploring the nooks and crannies of Mount Teide National Park, you can’t go wrong with a stay at Parador, sitting right next to a volcano in the stunning National Park.
Villa El Risco, Hacienda Cuatro Ventanas by Be Tenerife – This XVII century Canarian house makes a scenic stay in the most emblematic area of the north coast of Tenerife, 200 meters from El Socorro beach!
Hacienda Cuatro Ventanas is thus a great base for Tenerife hikes in the northern region of the island and to Mount Teide National Park.Β Yet the main draw to a stay at Villa El Risco is the unbeatable sunset!
Hacienda Soccorro by Be Tenerife – I stayed here during my 5 days in Tenerife: a luxury villa on the edge of a cliff! Highlights of Hacienda El Socorro include expansive ocean views and access to a tropical garden that takes the form of a banana plantation. North Tenerife hikes are within easy reach too!
Villa White Whale – Located in Adeje, this villa benefits from a private pool, a garden, barbecue facilities, free WiFi, and free private parking. Plus, south Tenerife hikes are only a short distance away from Villa White Whale.Β
Villa8 – In Puerto de Santiago, this villa stands within easy reach of Mount Teide National Park, as well as to Tenerife hikes along the north coast. South Tenerife hikes are also at a doable distance from Villa8!
