Get ready to stamp your passports because I’ve got the scoop on the most drool-worthy islands you absolutely need to check out in 2024.

If you’re anything like me, the idea of exploring an island, with its promise of secret beaches, perhaps lush jungles, or hidden coves, just gets your heart racing.

So, I’ve been daydreaming (and doing a ton of research) to bring you my ultimate list of the best islands to visit in 2024.Β

We’re talking about the best places that go beyond the usual tourist trails (but some major islands and popular destinations too), places where you can feel the sand between your toes, dive into azure waters, and experience local cultures that leave you spellbound.

From the Caribbean vacation and its vibrant rhythms to the Greek islands’ historic sites, and the vibrant coral reefs of the Indian Ocean, these islands are the islands that made my list of best islands to visit in 2024.

Whether you’re in it for the adrenaline-pumping water sports (hello fellow scuba divers), the slower pace of a spa retreat, or simply to soak up the sun on a stretch of pristine beach, I’ve got you covered.

Ready to find out which islands made the cut of the best islands to visit in 2024?

1. Lipsi, Greece

If you’re in search of a magical island getaway, let me take you on a journey to a little-known slice of paradise in the Aegean Sea: Lipsi, Greece.

Definitely, a number one on my best islands to visit in 2024 list.

My recent adventure brought me to this little island, and wow, it’s truly a unique treat for nature enthusiasts.

Picture a place where time seems to stand still, and each breath of sea air melts your stress away.

Lipsi is a great place if you want to enjoy Greek local culture and relax in nature.

This beautiful island boasts untouched landscapes, incredibly welcoming locals, rich culture and delicious food that’s just waiting to be discovered.

As someone who’s always hunting for the next hidden gem, stumbling upon Lipsi was like hitting the travel jackpot.

Tucked away in the Dodecanese Islands, this tiny island escapes the heavy tourist traffic that you see in other famous Greek spots like Zakynthos or Mykonos.

And that’s exactly the charm of Lipsi – its preserved beauty offers a genuine slice of Greek life, far from the crowded scenes, making it a truly irresistible spot.

Lipsi Town radiates the quintessential ambience of the Cyclades, featuring homes painted white, hugged by the vivid pinks of bougainvillaea flowers tumbling down their walls.

Wandering through the streets, you’ll find cozy cafes, charming restaurants and small stores offering local crafts.

Make sure to take a stroll down to the harbor, where the vibe of the village truly comes to life. Also, make sure to try the local cheese, it’s delicious.

2. Hokkaido, Japan

As a travel blogger who’s ventured across the globe, my journey to Hokkaido in the heart of winter stands out as one of the most unforgettable experiences.

Mostly because I’m not a big fan of winter activities but Hokkaido, with its unique blend of natural beauty, cultural festivities, and culinary excellence, should be a must-visit destination on my best islands to visit in 2024 travel list.

The moment I stepped into the snowy embrace of Hokkaido, Japan’s second-largest island, I knew I was in for something special.

My first stop was the Sapporo Snow Festival, an event that truly showcases the spirit of winter in Japan.

Walking through the streets of Sapporo during cold winter months, I was impressed by the giant ice sculptures that seemed to bring the city to life, each telling its own story against the crisp, white backdrop.

The creativity and craftsmanship on display were unlike anything I’ve ever seen, turning the city into a vibrant gallery of ephemeral art.

Sapporo is also where I had one of the best ramen in my life – with corn and butter!

But Hokkaido’s winter charm doesn’t stop in Sapporo.

A visit to the Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival revealed a landscape transformed into a sparkling winter wonderland.

The festival’s illuminated ice sculptures, set against the serene beauty of the frozen lake, created an otherworldly atmosphere – a sufficient reason to say this trip was a good idea.

Β

It’s also very photogenic, which if you know me is a good reason for me to add it to my best islands to visit in 2024.

Beyond the festivals, Hokkaido offered some of the freshest and most exquisite seafood I’ve ever tasted.

The island’s cold, clean waters are the source of incredible culinary treasures.

Dining on crab, uni (sea urchin), and scallops that were caught just hours before they appeared on my plate was a highlight of my trip.

Each meal was a celebration of the sea, prepared with a simplicity that honored the ingredients’ natural flavors. And you don’t need to go fine dining to experience it.

Exploring Hokkaido also meant immersing myself in its stunning natural landscapes.

From the quiet majesty of the Daisetsuzan National Park, with its snow-covered mountains and valleys, to the peaceful shores of Lake Toya, every day was an adventure.

Kawguchiko onsen

Whether I was enjoying the exhilaration of skiing down pristine slopes or soaking in a steaming onsen (hot springs) with snowflakes gently falling around me, Hokkaido’s natural beauty was a constant source of happiness.

Reflecting on my time in Hokkaido, it’s clear that this island offers a winter experience like no other.

It’s a place where the hustle of modern life fades away, leaving you to enjoy the moment, whether you’re appreciating a sculpture made of ice, savoring the freshest catch of the day, or simply taking in the silent beauty of a snow-covered landscape.

For those seeking a blend of adventure, culture, and culinary delights in 2024, Hokkaido should be at the top of your best islands to visit in 2024 list.Β

3. Fraser Island, Australia

As my plane gracefully ascended from the sandy shores of Seventy-Five Mile Beach, the immensity and grandeur of Fraser Island unfolded beneath me.

Flying over this vast expanse of sand, forest, and ocean, I felt a profound sense of awe for this huge sand strap off Australia’s coast.

Fraser Island

From the air, I had a bird’s-eye view of the island’s rugged coastline, where the crashing waves met the golden sands of beautiful beaches (shark-infested though), and the lush greenery of the tropical rainforests contrasted with the sparkling blues of the surrounding ocean.Β

It was a perspective that truly highlighted the island’s status as the largest sand island in the world and emphasized its significance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Descending back on the beach, I eagerly embarked on a journey to explore Fraser Island up close and personal.

One of the most exhilarating moments came as we touched down on the beach runway, where the roar of the engines was replaced by the soothing sound of the waves lapping against the shore.

Stepping out onto the sand, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of adventure coursing through my veins, knowing that I was about to discover all that this extraordinary island had to offer.

Β

As we ventured inland, we were greeted by the sight of Fraser Island’s famed dingoes, wild and free in their natural habitat.

These iconic Australian animals are a symbol of the island’s untamed wilderness and even though they seem friendly they are dangerous animals.Β

Fraser Island - champagne pools

But it wasn’t just the wildlife that captivated me; it was also the island’s stunning natural features, such as the crystalline waters of Lake McKenzie and the ethereal beauty of the Champagne Pools on sunny days.Β

This is the group tour I did and highly recommend especially if you don’t feel comfortable driving 4×4 on the beach full of dingos πŸ˜‰

4. Mallorca, Spain

If you’ve been following along with my adventures in 2022 and 2023, you’ll know that I spent a good chunk of the year soaking up the sun in Mallorca, Spain.

Now, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Balearic Islands, but Mallorca holds a special place in my heart, so it had to be on my best islands to visit in 2024 list.

While I’ve found the charms of Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera equally captivating, there’s something about Mallorca that keeps drawing me back.

Sure, it’s known for its resort areas and lively club scene, but if you’re willing to venture off the beaten path, you’ll discover a side of Mallorca that’s truly magical.

Let’s talk about the beaches, shall we? Mallorca is blessed with some of the most stunning coastlines you’ll ever lay eyes on.

From rugged cliffs to secluded coves with crystal-clear waters, there’s no shortage of picturesque spots to explore.

Whether you’re craving a quiet day by the sea or a lively beach scene, Mallorca has got you covered.

Places like Cala Formentor, Cala DeiΓ , and Cala Varques are just a few examples of the hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

But it’s not just about the beaches – Mallorca’s landscapes are as diverse as they are breathtaking.

Take a trip to the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dominates the island’s northwest corner with its dramatic limestone peaks.

Booking.com

Palma de Mallorca
Palma de Mallorca

And don’t forget to hop on the vintage wooden train to Soller – trust me, it’s a journey you won’t soon forget.

Of course, no trip to Mallorca would be complete without exploring its urban side.

Palma de Mallorca, the island’s capital, is a vibrant city bursting with culture, gastronomy, and leisure activities.

And the best part?

Everything is within easy reach – whether you’re exploring the city streets or venturing out to the island’s major attractions, you’re never more than an hour’s drive away.

So there you have it – Mallorca in all its glory. Whether you’re a beach bum, a nature lover, or a city slicker, there’s something for everyone on this beautiful small island.

Read more about Mallorca in my Best Mallorca Itinerary.

5. Tenerife, Spain

Playa de Las Teresitas, Tenerife
Playa de Las Teresitas, one of the most beautiful beaches in Tenerife

Let’s start with the basics: Tenerife isn’t just big – it’s the largest and most populated island in the entire Canary archipelago.

Β

With nearly a million residents calling it home and a whopping five million tourists making their way here each year, you know there’s something special about this place.

Now, let me take you on a tour of Tenerife’s diverse landscapes.

playa amarilla tenerife

Picture this: rugged volcanoes towering against the horizon, azure waters lapping at golden shores, and charming seaside towns bustling with life.

It’s a scene straight out of a postcard, and trust me, it’s even more breathtaking in person.

But what really sets Tenerife apart is its endless array of adventures waiting around every corner.

That’s why many digital nomads are tempted to be working and living in Tenerife.

The Parador de las CaΓ±adas del Teide Tenerife

Whether you’re a thrill-seeking hiker, a nature lover, a water-loving surfer, a seeker of vibrant nightlife, a couple looking for a romantic getaway, digital nomad or a laid-back beach bum, there’s something here for everyone.

And let me tell you, after spending five days in Tenerife exploring every nook and cranny of this volcanic paradise, I’ve fallen head over heels for its charms.

Rambla del Castro Tenerife
Hiking the Rambla del Castro trail in Tenerife

Let’s talk Tenerife’s hiking trails, shall we? Tenerife is a bona fide hiker’s paradise, with over 1,000 kilometres of trails crisscrossing its diverse and lush landscapes.

Β

From leisurely strolls through lush forests to adrenaline-pumping treks up rugged peaks, there’s a trail here to suit every skill level and interest.

los abrigos natural pool tenerife

But wait, there’s more! Tenerife is also home to some of the most enchanting natural pools you’ll ever lay eyes on.

Carved into the island’s dramatic coastline, these secluded alcoves offer a tranquil sanctuary where you can soak up the sun and take a refreshing dip in crystalline waters away from the hustle and bustle of the crowds.

whale watching in tenerife

And let’s not forget about the ocean adventures. Tenerife is a prime spot for whale and dolphin watching, with opportunities to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Plus, with some killer surf spots along its shores, it’s a perfect place for wave riders looking to catch the next swell.

So, if you’re ready to dive into an island paradise that’s bursting with natural beauty and adventure, Tenerife is calling your name.

Pack your bags, and get ready for an unforgettable journey that’ll leave you with memories to last a lifetime

6. Sri Lanka

Tea Plantations Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is one island that absolutely deserves a prime spot on your 2024 travel bucket list.

Despite enduring its fair share of challenges, including the pandemic, economic downturns, and supply chain issues that have hit its tourism sector hard, this nation still shines bright with its resilience and charm.

I count myself incredibly fortunate to have spent three magical weeks in Sri Lanka back in February 2020, just before the world was turned upside down by the pandemic.

And let me tell you, this island stole a piece of my heart that I’ll never get back – in the best possible way.

baby sea turtle

From its full of tropical fish waters, pristine sandy beaches and thrilling surf breaks to its national parks with vibrant wildlife, Sri Lanka is a true treasure trove of experiences waiting to be uncovered.

What’s truly remarkable about Sri Lanka is the sheer diversity packed into such a compact space.

One moment, you could be riding the waves at sunrise, and by dusk, you’re soaking in the breathtaking vistas of lush green tea fields – talk about a day well spent!

Galle lighthouse

But the magic doesn’t stop there.

Sri Lanka offers a little something for everyone, whether you’re craving a relaxing beach getaway, an adrenaline-fueled safari adventure, or a culinary journey through its tantalizing flavors.

And let’s not forget about the warmth and hospitality of the Sri Lankan people, who are renowned for their kindness and generosity.

Elephant in Yala national park

And speaking of flavors, Sri Lanka’s culinary scene is an adventure in itself.

From the comforting goodness of kottu roti to the exotic delights of local fruits and the sweet indulgence of watalappan, every bite is a journey into a world of tantalizing tastes found nowhere else on earth.

So, if you’re in search of a destination that promises a little bit of everything – sun, surf, wildlife, adventure, and unforgettable flavors – look no further than Sri Lanka.

7. Procida, Italy

Next on my theΒ best islands to visit in 2024 list is Procida.

Procida is very close to Capri and Ischia, yet much less popular.

It’s the smallest inhabited island in the bay, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in charm and tranquillity.

Procida is a revelation for those of us weary of tourist trails.

Unlike the glamorous Capri or the sprawling Ischia, Procida offers a serene retreat, where life moves at the leisurely pace of waves lapping against the shore.Β

The island’s beauty lies in its simplicity and the genuine warmth of its people, making you feel more like a guest than a visitor.

A must-visit spot that captured my heart is Marina di Corricella.

It is a picturesque harbor where time stands still – pastel-colored houses cling to the cliffside, small fishing boats bob gently in the water, and the air is filled with the scent of the sea and freshly caught fish being grilled at quaint restaurants.Β

The view from the road leading up to the castle is breathtaking; with the 17th-century fishermen’s houses and the pastel-lemon facade of the Santa Maria delle Grazie Incoronata church adding to the scene’s enchantment.

Procida doesn’t boast the grandiose attractions of its neighbors but invites you to find joy in the simple pleasures – wandering through narrow streets, savoring a gelato by the waterfront, or just soaking up the sun and the laid-back vibe.

procida-italy-blue

It’s a place where the beauty of Italy is distilled into its purest form, offering an escape that feels both intimate and grandiose. So, if you’re yearning for an Italian escape that feels untouched by the frenetic pace of modern tourism, Procida whispers its siren call.

It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best treasures are the ones hidden in plain sight, waiting to be discovered by those who venture off the beaten path.

8. Sardinia, Italy

palau-sardinia-italy

Summer in the Mediterranean is a season infused with magic and endless possibilities.

But let me tell you, spending summer on an island in the Mediterranean takes the experience to a whole new level.

And when that island happens to be Sardinia, well, prepare to be transported to a realm that feels more like the best Caribbean islands than the Mediterranean gem.

palau-sardinia
Snorkelling at La Maddalena

Sardinia’s allure is undeniable, with its stretches of talcum powder white sand beaches, waters so clear they rival crystal, and rugged rocky shores that add a touch of drama to its landscape.Β

But the real piΓ¨ce de rΓ©sistance? That would undoubtedly be the La Maddalena National Park – an untouched archipelago comprising seven larger and 55 smaller islands, all nestled off the cyan-colored coast of Sardinia.

palau-sardinia-italy

Click here to book a cruise around La Maddalena’s exotic-like islands!

It’s like stepping into a postcard, and trust me when I say that a boat trip around these islands is an absolute must. Probably, I should I add them to theΒ best islands to visit in 2024 list πŸ˜‰

From the deck of your vessel, you’ll have a front-row seat to marvel at the unspoiled nature and serene beauty of this UNESCO-acclaimed site.

Of course, La Maddalena isn’t the only spot where you can enjoy Sardinia’s pristine beaches and iridescent seas.

Along the island’s northern coast, you’ll find gems like Spiaggia di Porto Faro, where the backdrop of a white-washed lighthouse adds a touch of whimsy to the scene.

It’s the kind of place where time seems to stand still, and every moment feels like a cherished memory in the making.

palau-sardinia-italy

And let’s not forget about the evenings – those balmy nights when the air is alive with the scent of the sea and the promise of adventure.

Picture yourself on the balcony of a colorful beachfront house, sipping on a glass of deep red wine as the sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the landscape.

That, my friends, is what I call true Sardinian luxury – and it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.

9. Fuerteventura, Spain

Fuerteventura holidays

Endless stretches of golden sands kissed by the Atlantic Ocean’s turquoise waters, rugged volcanic landscapes that seem straight out of a sci-fi movie, and a laid-back vibe that’s as infectious as it is irresistible.

Trust me when I say that Fuerteventura isn’t just your average island getaway – it’s a whole mood, a lifestyle, and an adventure waiting to happen.

First up, let’s talk beaches. Fuerteventura boasts some of the most jaw-dropping coastlines I’ve ever seen.

From the iconic dunes of Corralejo to the hidden gems like Playa de Cofete, there’s a beach here to suit every mood and preference.

Whether you’re a sun worshipper looking to catch some rays or a water sports enthusiast itching to hit the waves, Fuerteventura has got you covered.

But it’s not just about the beaches – oh no, Fuerteventura has so much more to offer.

Take a hike through the otherworldly landscapes of Parque Natural de Corralejo, where towering sand dunes give way to volcanic peaks and ancient craters.

And let’s not forget about the food – because trust me, you haven’t lived until you’ve sampled the local cuisine here.

From fresh seafood straight from the ocean to hearty stews and mouthwatering cheeses, Fuerteventura’s culinary scene is a feast for the senses.

Fuerteventura holidays

So whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or just a taste of island life at its finest, Fuerteventura has got it all and then some.

Pack your bags, and get ready for an experience you won’t soon forget – because trust me, once you’ve experienced the magic of Fuerteventura, you’ll be counting down the days until you can come back for more.

10. Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Isla mujeres

Let me take you on a journey to a slice of paradise that’s a bit off the beaten path, yet so captivating, it lingers in your soul long after you’ve left – Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

This enchanting island, a mere 20-minute ferry ride from CancΓΊn, is the kind of place where magic seems real and the hustle of everyday life fades away with the setting sun.

What truly sets this island apart isn’t just its natural beauty – it’s the warmth of its people and the tranquil, inviting atmosphere that envelops you like a warm embrace.

One of the island’s crown jewels is Playa Norte, arguably one of the best beaches in the Caribbean.

Its shallow, calm waters make it perfect for a day of lounging and swimming, with the sunset views being nothing short of celestial.

But the adventure doesn’t stop at the shore.

Renting a golf cart to explore the island’s nooks and crannies was an experience filled with delightful surprises, from hidden beaches to local artisans showcasing their crafts.

Then there’s the underwater world of Isla Mujeres, a haven for snorkelers and divers alike.

The MUSA underwater museum is an extraordinary site where art meets ocean conservation, offering a surreal experience as you swim among hundreds of statues teeming with marine life.Β

And for those seeking a thrill, swimming with the whale sharks in the warm waters surrounding the island is an unforgettable encounter with these gentle giants.

But Isla Mujeres isn’t just about natural wonders; it’s also steeped in history and culture.

The Mayan Temple dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of childbirth and medicine, offers a glimpse into the island’s ancient past, standing as a testament to its deep-rooted significance long before tourists discovered its shores.

In every sense, Isla Mujeres is a treasure chest of experiences waiting to be unlocked, a place where every sunset paints a new masterpiece and every corner tells a story.

So, if you’re yearning for a destination that offers both relaxation and adventure amidst stunning natural beauty, Isla Mujeres is calling your name.

11. Jamaica

This island, vibrant with life and pulsating with rhythm is an obvious choice for the best islands to visit in 2024 list.

From the moment I stepped off the plane, I was embraced by an air filled with the sweet scent of jerk spices, the melodious sounds of reggae, and an infectious energy that promised adventure at every turn.

Jamaica is a land of staggering contrasts, from the serene blue mountains where the world’s finest coffee comes to life, to the bustling streets of Kingston, brimming with history and culture.

My journey took me to the famed Seven Mile Beach in Negril, where time seemed to stand still as I watched one of the most breathtaking sunsets my eyes have ever witnessed.

The golden sands stretched endlessly, kissed by azure waters and laughter-filled air.

No visit to Jamaica is complete without diving into its culinary delights.

I found myself on a gastronomic journey, from roadside stands serving spicy jerk chicken that set my taste buds alight, to luxurious restaurants offering fusion cuisine that married traditional flavors with modern twists.

And the rum? Oh, the rum was like dancing through history, each sip telling a story of the island’s spirited past.

But what truly sets Jamaica apart is its soul, embodied by the people who call this island home.

Their warmth, resilience, and joy for life are contagious.

They welcomed me with open arms, shared stories that you won’t find in any guidebook, and showed me the true heart of Jamaica.

Adventures in Jamaica are as diverse as the island landscapes.

I found myself mesmerized by the luminous lagoon in Falmouth, where the waters glow with fluorescent light, and trekking through the lush rainforests to find hidden waterfalls that promised a natural respite from the tropical heat.

And let’s not forget the cultural pilgrimage to Bob Marley’s Nine Mile, a journey that offered insights into the life of a legend who put reggae and Jamaica on the global map.

As for my 11 Best Islands to Visit in 2024 list, well, I hope it helps you plan your own island adventures this year. Have you been to any of the islands from theΒ best islands to visit in 2024 list before?

Or is there somewhere else you can’t wait to explore? Let me know in the comments below – I’d love to hear from you.

Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival is definitely a bucket Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival is definitely a bucket list experience!

Each year during the winter months, Hokkaido's Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival brings a dose of colorful magic to this corner of Japan with numerous illuminated ice sculptures. It was definitely my favorite winter festival till today 😍

Snowshoeing is one of the best ways to get outside and enjoy the beauty of winter. And to enjoy the famous JAPOW - the iconic great powder of Japan!

Fresh snow in Hokkaido is said to be of the finest quality. So fine, in fact, that skiers and snowboarders all over the world insist on riding JAPOW at least once in their lifetime. Have you tried it already?

As you can see I couldn’t stop smiling during my trip to Japan - I became a true winter fan β„οΈπŸ˜

But what’s not to love?

Scenery is absolutely stunning and the food is delicious (imagine delicious bowl of ramen on a cold day 🍜). There is so much to do such as Ice and Snow Festivals around Hokkaido plus hips of activities such as snowshoeing, skiing and snowboarding ⛷️ And my absolute favorite part are Onsens - traditional Japanese hot baths πŸ§–β€β™€οΈ nothing better than a dip In hot springs after a day out in the snow 😍
